What are some ways you can help children and youth develop a positive body image?

  • Focus on values and behaviours like kindness, honesty and courage rather than on physical appearance.
  • Make time for both physical and non-physical activities in the home.
  • Model fun ways to move your body which are not focused on body weight, shape or size
  • Find ways to show that there is no one ideal body image or size and that diversity is healthy and normal.
  • Try not to dismiss your child’s worries. Listen, talk about their feelings and validate their experiences. 
  • Share that talking about other people’s bodies is bullying and can be harmful.
  • Recognize that health can be at any size. Focus be on overall wellbeing, care and healing.
