Separation and Divorce: Helping Children Adjust to Family Changes

There are many ways to be a family, and every family is unique. Family changes, such as separation and divorce, are significant events. They can deeply impact every member of the family, especially children. You can help your child adapt to these changes and support their mental health and well-being.

Examples of Family Changes

  • Separation is when parents or primary caregivers choose to change their relationship. This may involve co-parenting (placing the focus of the relationship on what is best for the children) but living apart. Some choose to stay in the same household but with changed roles, relationships and routines.
  • Divorce is the process of ending a marriage. It often involves legal procedures and custody arrangements, such as shared or sole decision-making.
  • Blended Families bring together two parents and their children from previous relationships. This can include step-parents, step-siblings and other new family members into a child's life.

Family changes, such as separation and divorce, bring big changes for children and require everyone involved to adapt in different ways. It’s normal for all to feel a range of emotions like grief, anger, fear, exhaustion, shame, anxiety, self-doubt and, perhaps, some relief. It’s completely okay to feel overwhelmed. Just take it one step at a time.

Here we share some ways to support the mental health and well-being of all family members. We explore ways to help your child cope with separation and divorce, understand their emotions and thrive despite these challenges. We also include suggestions for how to take care of yourself while working through these changes.
