Seeking Additional Support

Look for help if you are concerned about your child’s emotional health and think it may relate to their gender identity. Talk to your child’s family doctor, paediatrician, mental health professional, local medical clinic or friendship centre, or health navigators at TransCare BC (1-866-999-1514) that specialize in the care of transgender and gender-creative children.

What feels right for your child may or may not seem strange or unfamiliar to you. Some parents and caregivers may have a hard time believing that their child’s gender identity is different than their assigned sex at birth. Some find it difficult to accept when their child’s sexual orientation differs from what was expected. Others may be concerned about the challenges their child may face and the adjustments the whole family will have to make. They may worry about how to share with family members and their community. If you are having difficulties, please seek help for yourself. Some places to start:

  • Find the information you need to educate yourself. Getting your questions answered can lower your anxiety and help you plan for your child’s needs.
  • Get support for yourself. Work through your feelings of loss, worry, or confusion. Connect with other parents or caregivers like a friend, parent peer support worker, peer support group or online network. A counsellor may be able to help you deal with your emotions so that you can focus more clearly on your child’s needs.
  • Take time for self-care. Take care of yourself so that you can be ready to support and model self-care for your child. Consider joining a support group and making new friends who share your experiences.

As your child explores their gender and sexuality, their identity and expression may continue to evolve. Support your child to be who they are and let them know you are their strongest supporter. This will nurture their sense of self and overall well-being. Who your child is, including their gender identity, is beautiful. Everyone’s journey will have some challenges, but most importantly, every child is worthy of honour and celebration for who they are every step of the way.
