Restorative practices in schools are a set of approaches to conflict resolution that focus on building healthy relationships and a healthy school community by preventing, mitigating and repairing harms.
Restorative practices have the potential to benefit many aspects of the school environment and can contribute positively to the health and well-being of both students and school professionals. Examples of these benefits include:
- Improved relationships between students and teachers
- Improvements to student and staff mental health
- Improved student sense of belonging, school climate and safety
- Improved equity and reduced racial disparity in discipline practices
- Increased graduation rates and decreased suspensions and expulsions
Hear from Cory Hartling, Principal at St'a7mes School and Josie Moore (Restorative Practices, Instructional Leadership Team) about what restorative practices look like in policy and practice in SD 48 (Sea to Sky), and the changes they have seen in their schools.
