It wouldn’t be the New Year without some talk of New Year’s Resolutions. Whether you choose to make a formal resolution or not, the New Year is the perfect time to reflect on everything that has happened in the past year, reset, and set a new intention for the coming year.
Some of the most common New Year’s resolutions include getting or staying healthy or fit. The MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!) Program in BC offers families an opportunity to enjoy getting fit and healthy together.
MEND is a fun, free 10-week program for children ages 7 to 13 and their families to learn how to make healthy choices together.
The program is led by trained leaders to help families make safe, effective and long-lasting changes by improving physical activity levels, nutrition and self-esteem.
During the program families learn about nutrition including how to make healthier food choices, how to read food labels, and how to prepare a healthy balanced meal. Above all, families learn how to have fun together as a family with games that can be played long after the program ends.
Another key component of the MEND Program is setting healthy living goals. MEND teaches families about making SMART goals, ones that are Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Limited. Creating new habits or changing behaviour can be difficult but setting SMART goals is one way to increase motivation and the likelihood of being successful.
This month, MEND will be in 25 communities across BC. To find out if MEND is right for your family and to find programs in your community visit www.bchealthykids.ca
This New Year, why not involve the whole family in building healthy lifestyle habits for life?
Wishing your family all the best for a healthy and successful 2016!
