Stress is something both kids and adults experience and can be caused by many different things. For kids, stress can be caused by day to day things, such as homework, a busy schedule, or arguments with friends or siblings, and by bigger life events, such as starting at a new school, changes in the family, or coping with illness. While small amounts of stress can be helpful in certain situations, like helping kids to focus when playing sports or when preparing for a test, too much stress can be overwhelming for kids, and can negatively impact their thoughts, feelings and behaviour. By learning to identify what can be stressful to them, how they react when stressed, and how to cope in healthy ways when stress happens, kids can develop helpful skills they can use to deal with stress throughout their entire lives.
The Kelty Mental Health Resource Centre is currently putting the finishing touches on a fun, free online resource for kids ages 9-11 to help them learn helpful stress management skills. The resource is called Stresslr, and features an adorable robot named Stresslr that helps kids to learn about stress and guides them through different activities to help them learn healthy ways to deal with stress. Stresslr introduces kids to belly breathing, muscle relaxation, problem solving, and even a worry box where kids can safely store their worries away. The resource was directly informed through feedback from kids and involves fun components such as building up points to get badges, different Stresslr moods that kids can choose from to match how they are feeling, and fun videos featuring Stresslr!
