Registration is now open for the 2012 Summer Institute: Promoting Mental Health in BC Schools!

When: Thursday and Friday, August 23-24, 2012

Where: University of British Columbia, Neville Scarfe Building, Vancouver

For the third year in a row, the Summer Institute will bring together teachers, school counsellors, district staff, parents, students and school community partners to talk about child and youth mental health. Building on the success of last year’s Institute, participants will share knowledge and ideas about how to foster school connectedness and promote student mental health and well-being.

This year, the Institute has been expanded to two days.  The first day will focus on how school communities can build school culture and connectedness to help promote positive mental health.  Evidence shows that students who are more connected to their school community have better mental health.  Dr. Stuart Shanker from York University will talk about self-regulation and how it is linked to overall health and well-being.  Burnaby principals David Rawnsley and Hal Wall will share stories of success about how they built connections in their school community and won an international award for their innovative approach!

The second day will focus on raising awareness and knowledge about mental health and substance use issues in classrooms and schools.  The day will feature a keynote presentation from Dr. Stan Kutcher, an expert in adolescent mental health. Journalist Kathryn Gretsinger will return again this year to moderate a panel discussion with students, and Dr. Lynn Miller will share her expertise on anxiety in the classroom.

We encourage you to connect with the teachers, students, parents and colleagues in your school community and join us at this exciting event!
