Feeling Inspired by Families

Over the weekend, we completed the filming for the cross-cultural mental health literacy video that I previously wrote about here. Hearing the powerful stories and messages shared by the people involved in the video has left me feeling inspired; I am feeling inspired by the resiliency and strength of families who are willing to share their experiences with mental illness to help break down stigma, and to encourage other families to seek out information and support if their child is experiencing a mental health challenge.

I was particularly moved by one family, whose story really captured the messages we are trying to highlight in the video. Messages of hope, of encouragement, and of reassurance that kids, parents, and families don’t have to tackle mental health challenges alone. There are people and resources available that can help families to understand what is happening, and that can support families in accessing the help they need. I was profoundly moved by this family and how their experience with mental illness has made them stronger and has brought them closer together.

I think the most inspirational moment for me in the creation of this video was listening to a very articulate, cheerful, and self-confident 13 year old share her experience with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Managing her OCD has allowed her to enjoy life once again and to feel excited about her future. This reinforced for me how important it is to get support and help early when a child or youth is experiencing a mental health challenge. It can truly be life changing!

I really look forward to sharing the final video with you in the next couple of months. I hope you will find the messages and stories as inspirational and moving as I did.
