Summer is right around the corner, and with the end of the school year approaching, many families are thinking about summer activities for kids, including camps. We thought we would put together a list of camps specifically for families with autistic children in celebration of autism awareness in April. Here is a list of camps recommended by ACT-Autism Community Training:
Canucks Autism Network
July 16-20 and August 20-24 / Various Locations / Children, adolescents & young adults
The Network offers recreational, sporting and vocational programs for kids and young adults. The programs are full of activities that focus on social development, recreation and life skills.
July & August / Vancouver / Children
The objective of this camp is to enable children between age 6 and 11 with learning differences (be it learning disabilities, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, etc) to connect with others like themselves in an accepting, supportive and empathetic learning environment that facilitates interpersonal relationships with same age peers.
Kids Matter Summer Camps
July & August / Abbotsford and Langley / Children & Adolescents
This is a social skills focused camp for children with learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders, Asperger's Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, neurological disorders, and emotional difficulties. Social skills training is accompanied by drama, arts and crafts, photography and sports activities for children age 6 to 15.
Want to learn more about autism spectrum disorders? Join us this upcoming Thursday April 26, 2012 at 12pm PST for the pinwheel education series on autism to learn about early assessment and diagnosis, mental health conditions that are comorbid with autism, as well as community education and support for families. Can't make it to the event? We will be posting a recording of it a week after it's done, so keep checking the website!
